Chiropractor for Carpal Tunnel in Kingsport, TN

Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when the median nerve is squeezed where it passes through the wrist, causing numbness, tingling or burning in the thumb, index and middle fingers, often worse at night. But hand numbness doesn't always start at the wrist: a pinched nerve in the neck or tight spots at the elbow or forearm can feel almost the same. At Elevate Sport and Spine in Kingsport, Dr. Preston Douglas, DC, CCSP (Tennessee License #3451) tests the whole path of the nerve before deciding what to treat, and refers early when the nerve is significantly compressed.
When to get urgent medical care

When to get care quickly. Sudden numbness or weakness in one hand or arm, especially with face drooping, trouble speaking or confusion, can be a stroke: call 911. Hand numbness after a wrist injury, or numbness with a hand that is cold or pale, also needs same-day medical care.

What causes carpal tunnel symptoms?

  • •Repetitive hand work: typing, assembly line work, using vibrating tools, gripping
  • •Wrist positions: working with the wrist bent for long periods, or sleeping with wrists curled
  • •Pregnancy: fluid shifts often bring on symptoms that improve after delivery (pregnancy care)
  • •Health conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease and arthritis
  • •Previous wrist fractures that changed the space in the tunnel

How chiropractic care may help

For mild to moderate symptoms:

  • •Extremity adjustments and mobilization for the wrist, hand and elbow
  • •Soft tissue work for the forearm and palm, including instrument-assisted techniques
  • •Nerve glide exercises that help the median nerve move freely
  • •Neck and upper back care when they're contributing (neck pain)
  • •Workstation and grip changes, and a night splint to keep the wrist straight while you sleep

Results vary. Night splinting and steroid injections have stronger research support than manual therapy, and surgery is the definitive fix when the nerve is significantly compressed. Dr. Douglas will tell you where you fall.

What to expect and when we refer

Your first visit runs 30 to 45 minutes. Dr. Douglas tests grip and pinch strength, sensation, reflexes and nerve provocation tests at the wrist, elbow and neck. Constant numbness, weakness, or wasting of the muscle at the base of the thumb gets a referral for nerve conduction testing and a hand specialist, because long-standing compression can cause permanent damage. More on your first visit.

Is chiropractic care safe for carpal tunnel?

Conservative care for mild to moderate carpal tunnel symptoms is considered low risk. The main risk is waiting too long when the nerve needs more than conservative care, which is why strength and sensation are re-checked at follow-ups.
