Spinal Manipulation

Spinal manipulation is a technique where practitioners, most commonly chiropractors, use their hands or a device to apply a controlled thrust (that is, a force of a specific magnitude or degree in a specific direction) to a joint of your spine, or any other joint in your body. The amount of force can vary, but the thrust moves the joint more than it would on its own. Spinal manipulation is different from spinal mobilization, which doesn’t involve a thrust (and is performed within a joint’s natural range of motion and can be controlled by the patient).

Spinal manipulation is one of the most common complementary health approaches used by adults and children in the United States, the 2012 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) showed. - According to the NIH, among U.S. adults who used chiropractic manipulation, sixty-seven percent used it to treat a specific health condition, while fifty-three percent used it for wellness, the 2012 NHIS saw, including:

  • 43 percent used it for general wellness or disease prevention

  • 25 percent used it because it focuses on the whole person—their mind, body, and spirit

  • 16 percent used it for improved energy

  • 11 percent used it for better immune function

  • 5 percent used it to improve memory or concentration.

  • Research found that people report positive outcomes and experiences, as well as reduced pain as a result of receiving spinal manipulation, the NHIS authors noted according to the NIH.

Extremity Manipulation

Like your spine, any joint in your body can become misaligned that may include: shoulder, wrist, elbow, ankle, hip, knee, etc, which can oftentimes lead to a bigger problem down the road. Please tell Dr. Douglas if you have any issues or complaints in these areas.

Sports Medicine

Dr. Douglas obtained the postgraduate designation of Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician® (CCSP®) by the American Board of Chiropractic Sports Physicians (ACBSP). The CCSP certification requires the doctor to attend a minimum of 100 hours of a 120-hour postgraduate program. This instruction is specific to physical fitness and the evaluation and treatment of injuries encountered in sports. Following the completion of these hours, the doctor must then take and successfully pass a comprehensive written examination. This training will aid the doctor in the prevention and treatment of athletic injuries by enhancing his diagnostic skills and patient care. The CCSP® certification exists to provide a uniform standard of education that assures teams and athletes that the doctor has met a minimum level of competency in chiropractic sports medicine.

Dr. Douglas joins over 5500 others internationally who hold this designation. If you are interested in having your sports event covered, please contact Dr. Douglas at (423) 239-9122 or call the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians at 844-327-2255.
